What is here

This is the game's front door and it front-loads everything. The starter room offers 25 choices at level 5 — eight Grass, eight Fire, eight Water and Eevee — and the choice is made once for the run. Immediately afterwards Prof. Jenner hands over the Pokedex and the CyberNav, and Amanda hands over five Poke Balls in the same visit.

It stays useful long after the introduction. The EV Training Rooms on the lower level hold one Power item each, and each room needs its own key card: Power Weight in the HP room, Power Anklet in Speed, Power Bracer in Attack, Power Belt in Defense, Power Lens in Special Attack and Power Band in Special Defense. Shana's desk in the Main Hall issues the Badge Card and the Virtual League badges.

The shop inside the building is deliberately minimal — four items, all cheap — so it is somewhere to leave from rather than a supply line. Everything else you need at this point is in East Gearen City outside.

Gearen Laboratory FAQ

How many starter Pokemon can I choose from in Gearen Laboratory?

25: eight Grass, eight Fire, eight Water and Eevee. All are level 5 and the list is the same regardless of difficulty mode.

Where do I get the Pokedex and CyberNav?

From Prof. Jenner in Jenner's Lab, immediately after you take a starter. Amanda gives you five Poke Balls in the same visit.

What are the Virtual Badges?

Badges from the Virtual League desk in the Main Hall. Virtual Badge #1 comes from defeating Falkner and #2 from Bugsy; each also needs the matching number of real gym badges.

Is Gearen Laboratory worth going back to?

Twice over, yes. The EV Training Rooms hold six Power items behind their own room cards, and Shana's desk keeps issuing Virtual League badges as your real badge count rises.
